The best time to visit Cape Town

Cape Town is a year-round destination, but the time of year you choose shapes everything: the weather, the crowds, the prices and what is on. The city has a Mediterranean climate, with warm dry summers and cool wet winters. This month-by-month guide will help you pick the best time to visit Cape Town and the Atlantic Seaboard for the trip you want.

Summer: December to March

Summer is peak season for good reason. Long, hot, dry days, warm evenings and the beaches at their best. December and January bring festive energy, the busiest strips and the highest prices, so book accommodation well in advance. The one thing to know is the southeaster, a strong summer wind locals call the Cape Doctor, which can pick up on afternoons; the Atlantic Seaboard is more sheltered than other parts of the city. For most visitors, February and March are the sweet spot, with all the warmth and calmer conditions.

Autumn: April to May

Autumn is quietly one of the best times to visit. The summer crowds thin, prices drop, and the weather stays mild and settled with beautiful clear days. It is an excellent time for hiking, wine tasting and exploring without the peak-season rush.

Winter: June to August

Winter is cooler and wetter, but it is also dramatic, green and the best value of the year. Rates fall, attractions are quiet, and the mountains and coastline look spectacular under moody skies. It is the start of whale season too, with southern right whales appearing along the coast. Pack for rain and cooler evenings, and you will have the city largely to yourself.

Spring: September to November

Spring brings warming days, wildflowers and the height of whale watching. The crowds have not yet returned, prices are still reasonable, and the landscape is at its greenest. It is a wonderful, underrated time to visit before the summer peak.
